Data-based prediction of particle emissions during manoeuvring of ships

Particulate matters (PM) represent impure carbon substances in various sizes due to an incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. Nowadays, regulation to effectively limit the amount of PM emissions are not implemented yet. Nevertheless, PMs are of a big concern in the shipping industry especially in vicinity to harbours and highly populated or even touristic areas. This paper presents a method to predict the ship's emission by means of a data based model. This model, implemented in a holistic ship model and sophisticated manoeuvring assistance system, will enforce the role of the human on energy efficient and emission reduced ship operation, especially during ship manoeuvres.
