Prediction of fatigue damage and spalling in a multilayered journal bearing shell

A 3D nonlinear approach for predicting the fatigue damage of plain journal bearings is proposed. The criterion selected, among several models, is inspired by Dang Van’s but is modified through an ascending slope in tensile direction. This criterion is consistent with the stresses seen on the bearing shells through hydrodynamic oil pressure and allows to reflect the severity of the compressive multiaxial non-proportional loading. From a fatigue test campaign, a modified Dang Van criterion is calibrated. Then, the simulation on the engine bench structure predicts a lifetime mapping consistent with the imposed loading and the experimental observations.
