Update on Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

Recent population-based studies provide consistent figures of SUDEP incidence in the general epilepsy population at 1.2 to 1.3 per 1000 person-year, while SUDEP rate in children varies between series. Focal-to-bilateral or generalized tonic-clonic seizures, together with sleeping alone, represent the most significant risk factors for SUDEP. Optimal care and nocturnal surveillance are important modifiable risk factors to reduce the risk of SUDEP, though further preventive strategies are needed. Regular communication of seizure risk and SUDEP might increase adherence to the treatment and thereby good seizure control.
