•Bifunctional conjugates consist of two various chromophores were synthesized.•The styrylpyridinium moiety of the conjugates is a DNA intercalator.•The photophysical and photochemical properties of conjugates are reported.•The conjugates can form ternary complexes with DNA and CB[7] due to two binding sites.
