Knowledge Graph Data Service for the Internet of Things Middleware: A Case Study

Two significant challenges remain in the current Internet of Things (IoT) application, especially in the IoT application of rural sewage treatment. (1) Non-smart devices are hard to access to the Internet due to the lack of computing and networking abilities. (2) Various devices are hard to be integrated due to the serious heterogeneities caused by different brands and types of devices. In this paper, we propose a Knowledge Graph Data Service for the Internet of Things Middleware to handle the above challenges. First, a new IoT middleware is proposed to bridge the data between non-smart devices and the Internet of Things for the accessing challenge. Second, the data from non-smart devices are then integrated into a knowledge graph-based database with unified web service APIs to solve the heterogeneity problem. Finally, the proposed system is applied to a real-world rural sewage treatment project. The system has been deployed to 19 rural sewage treatment sites and runs stably. The collected site data proves that our system is feasible and effective.
