Mitochondrial biology may influence the outcome of therapy for acute promyelocytic leukemia if arsenic trioxide is not part of the treatment. Inclusion of arsenic trioxide in the treatment regimen may cancel the adverse impact of certain mitochondrial abnormalities frequently associated with the disease.
