The metabolic upper critical temperature of the human thermoneutral zone

•There is a scarcity of understanding about the value, or even presence, of an upper critical temperature of the human thermoneutral zone.•We reviewed the literature that reports data on metabolic rate responses at rest to hot ambient temperatures.•The data from those studies return equivocal results; we suggest a study design for filling this knowledge gap.
