摘要
Proper stoma management is an important aspect of ostomates' health-related quality of life and overall health. Ostomates or caregivers need an accurate contour of the stoma to properly cut the wafer because a cutting error of as little as 2 mm can result in damaged blood vessels and profuse, recurrent bleeding. Thus, better postoperative wafer fitting has been identified as a key area for stoma care improvement. Our research aims to develop a computer-assisted stoma management visualization system to enable ostomates to receive precise wafer contours. In this paper, we compare a smartphone to a high-resolution scanner to determine the appropriateness of the smartphone in meeting the stoma management system requirements for accessibility and accuracy. Small objects similar in size to stomas were scanned and compared to evaluate the smartphone's accuracy. Results show that the smartphone has sufficient accuracy (<2 mm) on objects that only require a single overhead scan-including a stoma model. However, improvements to the scanning application are needed to obtain better accuracy and facilitate scanning tall and protruding stoma spouts that occlude peristomal skin from an overhead perspective.
