Microplastics in the surgical environment

•Microplastics are present in surgical environments at 1,924 ± 3,105 m−2 day−1.•The abundance of microplastics were greatest during working surgery hours.•The most abundant microplastic was polyethylene terephthalate.•The majority of the microplastics were of potentially clinically significant size.
