摘要

•Treatment with (+)-pentazocine (PTZ) was neuroprotective in a Brown Norway rat microbead model of glaucoma.•PTZ mediated neuroprotection was independent of IOP lowering effects.•At high IOP PTZ treatment did not provide measurable neuroprotection.•Contralateral optic nerves had subtle, complex changes in response to conditions in the ocular hypertensive eyes.
