Low-cost high-performance hybrid-PMsynRM for EV application

A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Reluctance Motor (PMsynRM) is one of the attractive options for an Electric Vehicle (EV) application since it can provide competitive performance with less amount of PMs compared to other PM motors. The back-emf voltage is still an issue for the PMsynRM as the speed increases and the conventional flux weakening method is normally required beyond the rated speed. However, this method comes with limited speed extension capability and low efficiency. This paper introduces a new design of a hybrid PMsynRM which comes to the fore with low-cost without significant loss in the performance. The new design also enables regulating the magnetization level of the low coercive force magnets in the rotor structure and therefore, more extension in the speed range can be obtained. The Finite Elements Method (FEM) results show that the proposed design provides superior performance compared to classical PMsynRMs.
