A short-term congestion management algorithm for the Italian subtransmission grid: experimental validation of the OSMOSE Zonal-EMS

The urgency for decarbonizing the electric power sector is stimulating the large scale exploitation of non programmable renewable energy sources. As the renewable power generator share increases, TSOs need to find new ways to operate the grids based on unconventional flexibility resources, e.g. demand response, dynamic thermal rating, synthetic inertia and so on. In this context, the OSMOSE project aims at developing a holistic approach to exploit these new flexibility resources and demonstrate their feasibility through real world demonstrators. This paper summarizes the main results of the experimentation conducted within the Work Package 5, i.e. the Italian demonstrator. This paper will focus on the results of the Zonal-EMS tests, which have been conducted on a portion of the South Italy 150 kV sub-transmission grid. The results demonstrated that the Zonal-Energy Management System has the ability to detect and solve congestion with good degree of accuracy and precision.
