•Fiber optic sensor for electrical current measurement proposed.•Original configuration of FBG-assisted Phase-OTDR, spun fiber and Mach-Zehnder Interferometer designed.•Phase fading problem eliminated.•Bending-induced and FBG-induced linear birefringence on the sensing performance analysed.•Simulation results show feasibility of the method.
