•Zinc-sulfo-oxide (ZnSO) was successfully prepared by the one-step method.•ZnS-10H polytype shows its presence in ZnSO.•Applicable in QDSSC and perovskite solar cells.•Work as an electron transport material and passivation layer.•Work as the electrode in Li-ion batteries.
