Nano-alumina incorporation into concrete by various methods

Corrosion of reinforcement is one of the main factors contributing to the degradation of reinforced concrete structures, especially when low strength concrete is employed. The concrete cover cracks, delaminates, and spalls as a result of the corrosion of steel reinforcement, which also reduces member strength and ductility. Nano alumina is amorphous powder has been chosen as an efficient cement substitute due to its higher compatibility with carbonate-containing materials.The nano alumina powder of size ranging from 1 to 100 nm is added to the concrete matrix replacing the cement at different percentiles starting from 1 % up to 7 %. Nano alumina is one of the good cementitious materials which are stable when dispersed in different alcohols. Nano alumina functions primarily as an inert filler that increased microstructure density and, through the boundary nucleation growth effect, hastened cement hydration. Major challenge is addition of nano particles and proper distribution of the particles without any accumulation. The present study provides various ways of adding nano-alumina into the concrete and optimizes the efficient method of mixing of particles for even dispersal and improved performance of concrete durability.
