Reduction of lift-off effect in pulsed eddy current testing for surface hardness classification of ferromagnetic steel

•A surface hardness classification method of ferromagnetic steel based on pulsed eddy current testing is proposed.•A combined feature that is insensitive to lift-off is proposed and used for hardness classification.•A novel PEC probe array with different lift-offs combinations is designed for better feature extraction and combination.
