•The most common molecular and pathological mechanism shared by NDs is oxidative stress (OS).•Alkaloids, a kind of phytochemical, have the potential to cure NDs by targeting the OS mechanism due to their antioxidant properties.•This article summarizes the role of plant-derived alkaloids (34) as antioxidant agents for NDs.
