Abstract
•The GaAs (631) surface self-assembles highly uniform periodic facets with period versatility.•The buckling-like reconstuction is the cornerstone for the faceting process.•Diffussion processes, constrained by the surface anisotropy, can skyrocket the uniformity.•In situ characterization and control are enabled by an appropriate reciprocal space analysis.•Heteroepitaxy is surveyed and its application on low dimensional nanostructures attained.
