•Increasing the laser power at a low scan speed improved the corrosion resistance.•Higher laser power sample showed low icorr and high repassivation potential.•Increasing the scan speed increased defects and lowered corrosion resistance.•Pits initiated at melt pool boundaries and by dissolution of cell interiors.•Linking up of dissolved cell interiors possibly caused pit propagation.
