Structural performance and corrosion resistance of fiber reinforced polymer wrapped steel reinforcing bars

•A new corrosion resistant hybrid is proposed.•Hybrid bar is a combination of steel bar wrapped with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP).•Axial tensile capacity and long-term corrosion resistance of the composite bars are investigated.•Beams reinforced with the proposed hybrid bars, carbon steel, and epoxy-coated bars are tested in the laboratory.•No debonding was observed between the hybrid bars and concrete during the experiments.
