An impedance matrix model of DFIG for harmonic power flow analysis considering DC-link dynamics

•The submitted manuscript proposes an analytical harmonic model of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) for harmonic power flow studies in power systems with DFIGs. Technically, the main highlights are summarized as follows:•The mechanism of the impacts of the dc-link capacitor on the harmonic impedance model of the RSC and GSC is revealed. Through mathematical derivations, it shows that the dc-link capacitor brings a harmonic coupling effect between the RSC and GSC.•The harmonic model of combined RSC and GSC unit has been developed by including the impact of the dc-link capacitor. The combined RSC and GSC unit can be modeled as a coupled impedance matrix, which includes the coupling between different harmonics and the harmonic coupling between the RSC and GSC.•Integrating the 2 × 2 impedance matrix model of the RSC and GSC with the linear harmonic model of the IG, a final impedance model of the DFIG is established.•The accuracy of the proposed impedance model and the application of the proposed model for harmonic power flow studies have been demonstrated by simulation studies. The impedance nature of the DFIG at low-order harmonics is also validated using lab experiments.
