Failure resistance research of the dual-stage hybrid bit

•Vibration failure and core failure analysis of the drill bit are carried out.•An innovative dual-stage hybrid bit is proposed, its special structure and working characteristics make the impact and wear resistance enhanced and the stability improved.•The dual-stage hybrid bit shows less vibration, less lateral force and less fluctuation of working parameters in the experiment.
