•The interaction between GO and PET MPs was quantitatively studied using 14C-LG.•GO significantly inhibited the phototransformation process of PET MPs.•The smaller the size of PET MPs, the stronger the inhibition effect of GO.•GO bonded to PET MPs and reduced ROS generation.•GO-bonded PET MPs showed stronger adsorption ability toward organic pollutants.
