Examining the role of attention problems in motor stereotypy in children with autism spectrum disorder

•Motor stereotypy is associated with attention problems in autistic children.•Motor stereotypy and attention problems improve over time.•Attention problems at intake did not predict stereotypy an average of 5 years later when controlling for attention problems at intake.•While attention dysfunction is related to increased motor stereotypy, other causal factors should be considered.
