Deep-shallow coupling mechanism in pull-apart basins: Insight from 3D numerical simulation

•Coupled models were established to investigate the influence on basins under different degrees of overlap between two strike-slip faults.•The inner tensional faults are more dominant for the development of basins than external tensional faults, especially in overlapping model.•The shapes of basin basement changes from U to V in final stage of overlapping model.
