Numerical simulations of shock interactions on 3D structured grids using a shock-fitting approach

In the past years, the development of shock-fitting techniques for computing 3D flows was held back by a main obstacle: the insertion and handling of shock surfaces mutually interacting within the background volume mesh, a considerable challenge especially in the structured grid context. In this paper, a new shock-fitting algorithm for structured grids has been coupled with a software for surface mesh generation in order to overcome the aforementioned limitations. In particular, the proposed technique was applied to high speed flows featuring 3D shock-shock and shock-wall interactions, which have been computed for the first time using a novel shock treatment in conjunction with a gas-dynamic structured solver.
