Including Grip Strength Activities into Tabletop Training Environments.

We introduce a rehabilitation platform combining motor control of the upper-arm and force control exerted by the hand during the manipulation of a tangible object in a tabletop gaming environment. This interactive tangible object is equipped with force sensors distributed on its surface, allowing the game to include clamping and loosening forces of the hand as part of its gameplay. The paper presents the result of the evaluation with 14 chronic stroke patients. The experience of the patients is overall positive. Some patients mentioned the need to improve the hedonic aspect of the game and modify the tangibles to comply with their various handling capacities. An ergonomic analysis of the rehabilitation situation complements the results of the subjective evaluation from patients and introduces design principles for force management rehabilitation systems for stroke survivors.
