Fishing in the Roman settlement of Troia (Carvalhal, Portugal): reconstruction of rod and line fishing tackle after fishing hooks
SAGVNTVM-PAPELES DEL LABORATORIO DE ARQUEOLOGIA DE VALENCIA(2022)
摘要
Troia (Carvalhal, Portugal) was one of the major Roman fishing-preserve centres, as reflected in the architectural remains still preserved at the site, most of which correspond to fish-salting workshops. Another kind of evidence that confirms the importance of halieutic activities in Troia is fishing tackle, recently analysed in the National Archaeological Museum in Lisbon. The materials, recovered during old excavations and largely unpublished, include fishing hooks, weights, needles and shuttles. This work presents fishing hooks (77 specimens), including typological and metric analysis, and compares them with other Roman fish hook assemblages from the Iberian Peninsula, for instance the city of Baelo Claudia. Similarly, the finds have been archaeologically contextualised in order to establish their social framework of prove-nance and their chronology.
