Behavioral activation for smoking cessation and the prevention of smoking cessation-related weight gain: A randomized trial

•First to evaluate behavioral activation for smoking cessation and mitigation of PCWG.•BAS+ plus TN did not increase the likelihood of smoking abstinence above SC plus TN.•SC was as efficacious as BAS+ for mitigating PCWG and caloric intake.•Increased alternative reinforcers predicted a 41% increase in the odds of abstinence.
