摘要
•Digit span is substantially greater for Chinese speakers than other languages.•This advantage remains when articulatory suppression prevents subvocal rehearsal.•The advantage does not appear to reflect visual coding.•It reflects a phonological component resistant to articulatory suppression.•Use of this component may be linked to the demands of learning to read in Chinese.
