•Retroperitoneal pyeloplasty with and without robotic assistance were compared to establish superiority.•Pyeloplasty anastomosis with robotic assistance was significantly quicker with lower variation.•Retroperitoneoscopy were complicated by anastomotic leaks and strictures while robotic had no complications.
