•We use a field experiment to test how subsidies affect LPG demand in rural Tamil Nadu.•LPG purchases increase sharply with the magnitude of the discount.•Subsidies are essential to move the rural poor to near exclusive use of LPG.•Future work should objectively measure traditional fuel displacement when clean fuel use increases.
