Identification and validation of novel genomic SSR markers for molecular characterization of guava (Psidium guajava L.)

•Novel genomic SSR markers identified with genomic location predictions for guava molecular characterization.•Direct standard PCR protocol and resolution of SSR alleles in agarose gel itself poses efficient SSR genotyping for developing fingerprints.•Efficient SSR markers for species and cultivar discrimination in terms of Rp, PIC, MI and Av. H.•Useful for phylogenetic classification and parental selection for hybridization as these novel markers were able to differentiate hybrid from their parental accessions.•As superior markers for discriminating parents, they are candidates to be used in marker assisted selection of guava.
