•Type 316LN stainless steel of 11 mm thick were successfully fabricated using the Laser + MIG hybrid welding Technique.•The hybrid (Laser + MIG) welding arc position significantly affects the depth of penetration.•The microstructure evolution and microsegregation in the fusion zone were systematically investigated.•The micro-segregation. δ-ferrite content, and secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) significantly influenced the mecnahical properties of weld joints.
