Biological rhythms allow organisms to anticipate environmental changes across the light/dark cycle and adapt accordingly. These rhythms occur on many scales, and the importance of circadian rhythms in health and disease has become increasingly clear, particularly in psychiatric illnesses. Far less is known about ultradian rhythms, including their prevalence in the human brain, and whether they are disrupted in subjects with psychiatric disorders.
