Development of hydrothermal corrosion model and BWR metal coating for CVD SiC in light water reactors

•Updated model that captures corrosion rate of CVD SiC was formulated.•Model was validated against high flow and irradiation data.•Model predicted low and high corrosion rates for PWR and BWR, respectively.•Bi-layer metal coating of Cr and FeCrAl on SiC/SiC composite is proposed for BWRs.•Metal coating survives BWR hydrothermal corrosion, quench and burst testing.
