More Experience Might Not Bring More Safety: Negative Moderating Effect of Pilots’ Flight Experience on Their Safety Performance

•We investigated the relationships between hazardous attitude, total flight hours, and flight exceedance rates among pilots.•Total flight hours at an intermediate level positively predicted hazardous attitude and flight exceedance rates.•Hazardous attitude did not mediate the relationship between total flight hours and flight exceedance rates.•Total flight hours at an intermediate level played a negatively moderating role between hazardous attitude and flight exceedance rates.
