While the transfusion of blood components may be life-saving in certain clinical cases, such as massive bleeding as described above, one must carefully weigh the risks and benefits of the blood product, specific to the clinical context and informed by current evidence. Standard laboratory testing alone should not be the impetus to transfuse. Viscoelastic testing should be considered in bleeding patients. A growing body of ev-idence has demonstrated the safety of restrictive transfusion practices.
