Biomass-derived biochar and its application in agriculture

As an alternative for fossil fuels, biomass (agricultural waste) has been introduced as a cheap, affordable, and sustainable resource. Application of biochar as a biomass derivative has successfully reduced emission of toxic compounds. In this work, preparation of biochar as well as its analysis techniques and application in agriculture has been reviewed. The important role of biochar in agriculture and related industries has been highlighted. This review highlights the application of biochar as an sustainable fertilizer. Biochar has proved to enrich the soil and protect microorganisms from stress conditions and moreover to have impact on both soil pH and microbial community activity.
