The design of a bipolar high-temperature superconducting cable is presented, and the electromagnetic analysis and insulation design parameters of a 10 kV/4.5 kA cable based on YBCO superconducting tape are given. Based on the design parameters, the development of the 20 m prototype was completed and some experimental were carried out. The test results show that the critical current value of the positive layer at 77 K is about 7960 A, and the critical current of the negative layer is about 8300 A, which meets the requirements of the design. The 35 kV/5 min DC withstand voltage and 75 kV lightning impulse withstand voltage tests were carried out on both of the positive and negative layers, respectively. The results show that the prototype could meet the insulation performance requirements of the 10 kV cable.
