Increased prefrontal cortical cells positive for macrophage/microglial marker CD163 along blood vessels characterizes a neuropathology of neuroinflammatory schizophrenia

•Increased macrophage receptor protein, CD163, helps to define high inflammation schizophrenia.•Over half of schizophrenia brains from an NIMH cohort have high cytokines and cortical inflammation.•Higher density of macrophages around capillaries in grey matter distinguishes high inflammation schizophrenia.•Neuropathology around blood vessels is evident in high inflammation schizophrenia prefrontal cortex.
