•Adverse childhood experiences were associated with daily tobacco and cannabis use.•Adverse childhood experiences were not associated with weekly binge drinking.•Cumulative adverse childhood experiences were strongly associated with substance use.•Walking for exercise lowered odds of current and prospective substance use.•Physical activity modality is an important consideration for substance use prevention.
