A Mesoproterozoic to Jurassic history of continental eclogites from the Guatemala Suture Zone–implications for a peri-Amazonian ancestry

•Continental eclogites from the Guatemala Suture Zone reflect subduction of a thinned pericratonic crust.•Eclogite protoliths comprise Mesoproterozoic to Middle Jurassic metabasites.•Ectasian precursors reflect extension in a peri-Amazonian arc setting.•Stenian protoliths belong to a bimodal suite that resulted from intraplate magmatism.•Late Triassic and Middle Jurassic metabasites record the breakup of western equatorial Pangea.
