•The phylogenetic relationships of seven Tricolia were explored.•New species of Tricolia reported from Northern Portugal up to Brittany (France).•Only one species occurs in the NE Atlantic archipelagos.•Tricolia miniata is a complex of species widely distributed in the Mediterranean.
