The comprehensive evaluation of how water level fluctuation and temperature change affect vegetation cover variations at a lake of ecological importance (Poyang Lake), China

•A novel indicator (Rtaw) was developed to assess the vegetation cover changes in the lake wetland.•The use of Rtaw decouples vegetation cover changes induced by two types of environmental factors.•Anomalous impacts of temperature change on vegetation cover changes in Poyang Lake were revealed.
