摘要
A multiphase computational fluid dynamics model development for a dense medium cyclone (DMC) treating coal is presented in this chapter. Literature review indicates that the flow in DMCs is highly complex and requires a multiscale modeling strategy. The particle separation mechanism in the DMC is also not fully understood. The chapter discusses various modeling strategies that are generally employed for the DMCs. The authors formulate and recommend a modified Algebraic Slip Mixture (ASM) model. The mixture model uses Newtonian and Non-Newtonian medium rheology models to account for medium viscosity and additional lift and drag forces to simulate magnetite medium dispersed in water-air flow. The Herschel–Bulkley viscosity model is predicting the magnetite medium segregation close to the gamma ray tomography data. Turbulence is resolved using the Reynolds Stress Model, while the discrete particle model is used for coal partitioning. The authors also explored the virtual design modifications using the modified ASM model for improving the performance in fine coal cleaning.
