A Quality Improvement Intervention to Enhance Cephalosporin Utilization for Surgical Prophylaxis in Reported Penicillin Allergy

Patient reported penicillin allergy is associated with higher rates of surgical site infections and alternative broad spectrum antibiotic use for surgical prophylaxis. This study evaluated a quality improvement intervention to increase cephalosporin use in perioperative patients with reported penicillin allergy in a hospital with a strong antimicrobial stewardship program.
