The Computational Approach to Plant Oxylipins Profiling

Oxylipins are a family of oxygenated natural products formed from the automatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The analysis and profiling of oxylipins are important to study changes in the number of oxylipins. These provide valuable information on metabolites derived from various precursors and also contribute to an understanding of various physiological and/or pathological processes taking place in living organisms. Given the unstable nature of oxylipins, it has been difficult to analyze them. However, in recent years there have been developments in the analysis and profiling methods of oxylipins especially due to the recent breakthroughs in computing technologies and strategies as well as the development of new and open databases. This chapter, therefore, discusses the importance of oxylipin profiling and reviews various computational tools for plant oxylipin profiling. It also provides an overview of the popular databases useful for the same purpose.
