Zeolites for environmental purposes

Booming human civilization and exhausts during production, emission, and distribution of conventional energy sources have caused the accumulation of considerable amount of harmful organic/inorganic toxic agents at an alarming rate. Even though many resources and modes of operations have been investigated and employed for the aforementioned purpose, zeolites along with their different variants have salient merits over the others as they are low cost, accessible in high amounts in almost all regions of the earth, have strong mechanical/thermal characteristics, are easy to amalgamate with encouraging sorption capability and capacity to discreetly regulate pH of soil or wastewater. In this chapter, a close look at zeolites, their properties, accessibility, advantages and disadvantages, etc. has been presented focusing broadly on wastewater and gas treatment for environmental remediation. Their application in extracting heavy metals, nitrogen group compounds, and other similar hazardous components present in wastewater and flue gases is the main focal point of this chapter.
