This chapter considers how to address ethical learning engineering in a principled, systematic manner. It offers an ethical sense-making approach and a practical framework for ethical sense-making in learning engineering. The corresponding matrix requires that teams consider how each ethical principle is presented at each stage by asking a series of corresponding questions. Samuel Messick developed a general value framework for use in assessment. The foundation of assessment reflects an instrument’s construct validity in terms of the amount and kind of evidence as well as whether it reflects a representative sample of the information and processes associated with the competency of interest. At their core, value sensitive design, reflective design, design justice, and anti-discrimination design share features with an ethical sense-making approach. Ethical affordances are contextually relevant design features that comply with established ethical principles and respect the values of stakeholder communities.
